Specialist endometriosis care in Alaska

Alaska trains its doctors through WWAMI, a five-state partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine; students complete the first two years at the University of Alaska Anchorage before finishing elsewhere in the network. No Alaska site appears on the AAGL Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship listing.

Travel defines access. Fairbanks is about 260 air miles from Anchorage and Juneau about 570, and Juneau has no road connection to either city, so a specialist visit in Anchorage or Seattle usually means a flight; Juneau to Seattle is about 890 air miles. The March of Dimes 2023 state report classified 50 percent of Alaska's census areas as maternity care deserts and noted that women in remote areas often fly to larger cities such as Anchorage before birth and stay in maternity housing. For 8.7 percent of birthing women, driving distance to a hospital could not be calculated because plane travel is likely required, and women who can drive or take a ferry average 52 minutes to the nearest birthing hospital.

Alaska adopted Medicaid expansion, per KFF's October 2026 status table. The Alaska Department of Health's Women's, Children's and Family Health page lists state programs.
