Endometriosis care in Hawaii: the facts that matter

The largest metro areas in Hawaii are Honolulu and Kahului. Hawaii has expanded Medicaid under the ACA (KFF). State programs and clinics: Hawaii health department, women's health (opens in new tab). Hilo is about 210 air miles and Kahului about 90 air miles from Honolulu, so neighbor-island patients fly to Oahu for specialist care.

Specialist endometriosis care in Hawaii

The University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu is the state's public medical school. The Queen's Medical Center women's health pages list gynecology and a provider specialty in minimally invasive surgery and urogynecology, but no named endometriosis program, and Hawaii has no site on the AAGL Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship listing.

Island geography matters more than mileage. Lihue on Kauai is about 110 air miles from Honolulu, and every neighbor island is reached by air. The March of Dimes 2023 state report classified all Hawaii counties as full access yet found that 23.4 percent of women had no birthing hospital within 30 minutes, more than double the national share, and that 72.9 percent of births took place on Oahu although only 70.9 percent of mothers lived there, because that is where NICUs and specialty care sit. Lanai has no birthing hospital at all, and the report notes that winding roads, weather, and tourist traffic stretch travel times even where distances look short.

Hawaii adopted Medicaid expansion, per KFF's October 2026 status table. The Hawaii Department of Health's Family Health Services Division page lists state programs.
